Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
