Crew Member Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

About the Mission

The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
